Northfield Banner

Teresa Engelmann
Mrs. Engelmann was raised in Harper, Kansas, and moved to Wichita the day after graduating from Chaparral High School in 1976. She soon met Tom Engelmann and in 1978, they married at Bethel Life Center, where they still attend church. Mrs. Engelmann began teaching first grade for Wichita public schools in 1980, after graduating from Friends University, and in 1986, she left the public school system to teach for Bethel Life School. While teaching first grade at BLS, Mrs. E. began tutoring middle and high school students in mathematics. She grew to love the older students and the mathematics discipline. She began teaching middle school in 1994, and became known for her “math tricks” that help to make math easier and more fun. Mrs. Engelmann came to Northfield in 2004, and heads the arithmetic department.

In their leisure time, Mr. and Mrs. Engelmann love to travel to Revolutionary and Civil War historical sites, major league baseball fields, and U.S. national parks. Most of all, they love spoiling their three children and five grandchildren. Their daughter Sarah and her husband Clayton live in Grand Prairie, Texas, with their children, Madison (5) and Noah (3). Their son Marty and his wife Jennifer live in Wichita with their children, Zoe (8), Ellie Mae (3), and Mollie (1). Jayson (19) currently lives in Manhattan, Kansas. She thanks God for all of his many blessings. Philippians 4: 12-13.

Basic Math
Students completing this course will have mastery of the basic concepts of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, and will be able to apply these skills to every-day applications. Fractions, decimals and percents will also be covered, as well as an introduction to algebra.
Algebra ½
This course provides a solid foundation for algebra, including ½ year of mathematics and ½ year of algebra introduction. We concentrate on the use of fractions, mixed numbers, decimals, and ratio, and well as volume and area.
Algebra I
This is the foundational year for all upper-level mathematics. Concepts such as problem solving, graphing, real numbers, factoring, and basic geometry are explored in depth. Students learn to use logic and a step-by-step approach that will help them to be successful in their every-day lives.
Algebra II
We review topics of Algebra I, then move into advanced skills of completing the square, deriving the quadratic formula, simplification of radicals, and complex numbers. Geometry and basic trig functions are also studied as an introduction to trigonometry and calculus.
Geometry
The study of geometry applies Euclidian proofs to the skills and concepts that have been learned in algebra to promote thorough and logical progression of concepts. The “why” of mathematics and geometry is our main focus as we explore geometric shapes, the rectangular coordinate plane, and progression of algebra and trigonometric concepts.
