Adela Garton
Mrs. Garton was educated in Wichita. She attended Stearman Elementary, Curtis Jr. High, and Southeast High. After high school, she went to Friends University, where in 1985 she earned degrees in political science and social science education with a minor in sociology. Adela earned a Master of Arts degree in Teaching in 2007. Her education certification areas are social studies grades 5-12 and English grades 5-8.

Mrs. Garton returned to Curtis Jr. High in 1985 as a teacher and was there during the transition from the junior high to  middle school model. Adela left the formal classroom in her sixth year of teaching to accompany her husband to Seattle, WA. Before returning to the school classroom as a teacher, Adela spent 5 years homeschooling her two youngest children. In 2005, Adela came to Northfield, where she now teaches Grammar as well as the Grammar School I, II, and III Literature and Composition courses.

She is married to Russ Garton, an engineer at Spirit Aerosystems. They have 3 children: Bethany, Rachel (class of 2010), and Stephen (class of 2013). She enjoys reading biographies and historical fiction, and treasures instilling a love for books in others. She likes to travel to historical places and visit museums. Most of all, she enjoys spending leisure time at home with her family.

Grammar

The basics of English grammar are taught as a foundation for articulate communication in both speaking and writing.

Grammar School I Literature and Composition

Fables, folktales, and mythology from various world cultures explored in Grammar School I World History class form the basis of the literature component of this class. A variety of sentence structures and ways to "dress up" paragraphs are explored in composition.

Grammar School II Literature and Composition

Greek mythology and Homer's timeless classics The Iliad and The Odyssey are the primary sources of literature in this course. Continued practice on writing techniques will lead toward the beginnings of essay writing by the end of the year. MLA style is introduced.

Grammar School III Literature and Composition

The literature in this class centers on Roman mythology, Virgil's The Aeneid, and Shakespeare's Julius Caesar. The five-paragraph essay is emphasized in composition. Basic library research skills and MLA formatting are taught this year.
