January School and June School
Northfield believes that education takes place out of the classroom as
effectively as in it. We also believe that circumstances change, but
the spirit of inquiry doesn't. Therefore, in an effort to demonstrate
and develop the good habits of inquisitive scholars, we offer a week of
“school” in an entirely different setting, under conditions that hardly
anyone would call “school.” We have converged for study in the hills of
middle Tennessee, the parkways of Washington D.C., the hiking trails of
the Natchez Trace, the prairies of Lemmon, South Dakota, and in the
summer of 2009, Williamsburg, Virginia. Learning happens. We enjoy one
trip after the end of the school year, during the third week of June.
With smaller groups, we tackle a sequestered time during January, when
winter helps us settle into the time and silence that learning requires.
