Midwinter Week
Midwinter Week is five days of service, study, and
performance. In 2007, Midwinter Week was devoted to a school-wide
series of lectures, tutorials, and performances by acclaimed flutist
Chris Norman and his ensemble, all of whom brought to Northfield the
traditional music of Maritime Canada, Scotland, and Ireland,
culminating in a concert at the Murdock Theatre in which student
vocalists and musicians performed alongside the professionals. In 2008,
American history singer-songwriter Jed Marum was in residence, bringing
history to life through story and song. His concert was held at the
Orpheum Theatre. Meanwhile, students engaged in hands-on work, such as
creating prayer ropes, constructing bookshelves to hold our collection
of the Great
Books, and crafting a music mosaic for our music studio. School
Administrator
Becky Elder has described Midwinter Week as “an attempt to free the
students from the classroom, so that they might experience in a
different way the freedom and privilege of learning.”
