Last year, from a series of lectures by Andrea Knighten, the president of the Wichita Area Sustainability Initiative, we learned that the first rule of creating a sustainable environment is to gain a deep knowledge of one's place. To that end, this year, we will be reading a book together on Fridays that dramatizes much of what we're up to at Northfield, with an eye toward an even deeper understanding of our place. That book is The Once and Future King by T.H. Whyte, particularly the first section, The Sword in the Stone, which tells the story of Arthur's education. We will read aloud and slowly, defining words, looking for patterns of connotation and denotation, subtle shifts in tone and rhythm, patterns of imagery, historical allusions--all the while seeking to see connections between Arthur's education and our own.
