crede - Middle English form of Old English creda ... from Latin credo meaning "I believe, trust, entrust"
What does "belief" have to do with "education", you may ask. What AN Whitehead said in his classic essay on the Aims of Education may surprise you.
"The essence of education is that it be religious.
"Pray, what is religious education?
"A religious education is an education which inculcates duty and reverence. Duty arises from our potential control over the course of events. Where attainable knowledge could have changed the issue, ignorance has the guilt of vice. And the foundation of reverence is this perception, that the present holds within itself the complete sum of existence, backwards and forwards, that whole amplitude of time, which is eternity."
As you will recall from our HOME page, Northfield is nothing more than a place where people who believe in the value of education gather to search for treasure ... for learning. But that place ... the Friends University neighborhood ... was searched by others before Northfield arrived and will be searched by still others in the future.
So in the spirit of duty and reverence, we believe and trust that there has always been and will always be a special bond among teachers and students on University Avenue ... past, present and future ... which is our CREDE ... a Community for Religious Education, Development and Enterprise.
And if that makes you wonder just what might be going on here ... why not come and see? You are welcome and will find your own belief in the value of education strengthened every day.
